The Storm Has Passed. Now What? 5 Critical Steps for Post-Hurricane Safety

5 Steps to Take Immediately After the Hurricane Passes

The silence after a hurricane can be just as overwhelming as the noise. You want to assess the damage immediately, but the hours following a storm are often when most injuries occur.

At Bailey & Bailey Contracting, we have seen the aftermath of dozens of storms. Before you pick up the phone to schedule repairs, please follow this safety protocol.

The Difference Between "Wind Damage" and "Flood Damage"

It is crucial to know your policy.

  • Wind-Driven Rain: If a shingle blows off and rain enters the hole, standard homeowner's insurance typically covers the repair and the interior water damage.
  • Rising Water (Flood): If water rises from the street into your home, that is a separate flood policy. We can help you identify the source of the water to make the correct claim.

Why You Need a Contractor at the Adjustment?

When the insurance adjuster comes to your house, they are looking at damage quickly. They might miss structural issues or subtle roof lifting.

  • Our Role: We recommend having a Bailey & Bailey representative present during the adjuster's inspection. We don’t bully them; we simply point out the technical damage they might miss, ensuring you get the fair value for a full repair, not just a patch job.

"Sudden" vs. "Long-Term" Damage

Adjusters will deny claims if they think the roof was already rotting before the storm. This is why we document the "freshness" of the damage—jagged edges on shingles, clean wood exposed, etc.—to prove the hurricane was the cause.

Beware of "Deductible Eaters"

If a contractor offers to "pay your deductible" for you, run. This is insurance fraud and is illegal in many states. Stick with honest pricing and legitimate practices.
